Webinar: Our Voices Matter - Impact of Covid-19

The Socio-economic Rights Project at the Dullah Omar Institute, University of the Western Cape is organizing a webinar titled ‘Our Voices Matter’ to discuss the impact of the measures adopted by the government to address COVID-19 pandemic on the lived experiences of people in informal settlements in Cape Town.

Following the outbreak of COVID-19 pandemic in the country, the government has adopted some measures under the Disaster Management Act 57 of 2002. This includes the imposition of lockdown across the country, thereby grossly affecting the rights of a great part of the population, especially the vulnerable communities. In addition, the government has announced some palliatives to cushion the effects of the pandemic on the people. While discussions on the legality and implications of these measures have continued among the elite, the voices of those most affected by these measures are hardly heard. Thus, this webinar, the first in a series to be conducted across various communities, seeks to project the voices of disadvantaged groups from informal settlements in Cape Town by focusing on the socio-economic challenges resulting from the lockdown.
