The Children's Rights Project (CRP)

The Children’s Rights Project (CRP), headed by Prof Benyam Dawit Mezmur, undertakes research, advocacy, and technical support activities related to the formulation and implementation of law and policy in line with the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child and the African Charter on the Rights and Welfare of the Child (African Children’s Charter).

Recent research projects include:

  • assisting with drafting, implementation, and monitoring South Africa’s Children’s Act, its regulations, and South Africa’s Child Justice Act
  • coordinating the Child Justice Alliance, which monitors the implementation of child justice standards in South Africa
  • providing technical support to child law reform initiatives in countries in Eastern and Southern Africa (Ethiopia, Angola, Kenya, Zimbabwe)
  • developing a handbook on the right to birth registration, name and nationality in Africa
  • preparing Country Briefs (Angola, Guinea, Lesotho, Zimbabwe, Rwanda, Malawi, Mozambique, and Zimbabwe) to strengthen civil society voices in the implementation of the African Children’s Charter
  • providing direct research support to the African Committee of Experts on the Rights and Welfare of the Child (ACERWC)
