On 16 August 2023, the National Research Foundation announced that UWC's application that Prof Jaap de Visser replace Prof Nico Steytler as the SARChI Chair in Multilevel Government, Law and Development has been approved.

Prof Steytler is now retired and was appointed as Emeritus Professor at UWC. He still participates in the Institute's research and teaching activities.

The SARChI Chair is located in the Dullah Omar Institute and this approval means that, for the next five years, the work of the Chair will continue in the Institute. Prof De Visser served as the Institute's Director from 2013 - 2022 and is proud to take over from Prof Steytler.

"I'm honoured and excited that my nomination has been approved. It is wonderful news, not just for me but also for the Dullah Omar Institute and the University of the Western Cape. It means that we can continue, and build on the excellent work that my predecessor, Prof Nico Steytler, has done in the first two terms of this SARChI Chair. They are big shoes to fill but with the help of my colleagues in the Institute, I am convinced we will make it a success. We will hit the ground running with the 3rd African School on Decentralisation starting on 4 September in Addis Ababa, one of the flagship projects of this SARChI Chair." - Jaap de Visser
