Prof De Visser delivers a lecture on SA’s local government system in Brazil
On 5 May 2016, Prof Jaap de Visser conducted a guest seminar at the Federal University of ABC in Sao Paolo, Brazil. He was hosted by Prof Gilberto Rodriguez, an expert in international relations, federalism and governance.
Prof De Visser lectured on the development of South Africa’s local government system, focusing on racism and local government under apartheid, the transition to democracy and the trials and tribulations of local government post 2000.
The lecture was attended by Masters’ and PhD students of the Federal University of ABC. Students expressed a keen interest in the phenomenon of community protests and the rise of new political parties and the impact that these may have on the upcoming local government elections.
