Launch: Report on Recognition of Community-Based Paralegals in Africa
The Socio-Economic Rights Project at the Dullah Omar Institute, University of the Western Cape, in conjunction with the African Centre of Excellence for Access to Justice (ACE-AJ) hosted the launch of the Research Report on Legal Recognition of Paralegals in Africa: Lessons, Challenges and Good Practices.
The meeting provided introspection on the journey from the conception of the research, to the launch of the report with a highlight on challenges and lessons learnt. The launch coincided with the inception workshop for the second phase of the research, both of which took place from 4-6 April 2022 in Entebbe, Uganda.
In the keynote address, Hon Dr Agnes Apea of the Uganda Parliament noted that community-based paralegals played an important role in realising access to justice for vulnerable and marginalised groups in Africa. She called all African governments to invest in the work of community-based paralegals.
