South African Research Chair in Multi-level Government, Law and Development

The SARChI Chair in Multi-level Government, Law and Development has been established at the Community Law Centre of the University of the Western Cape, working closely with the Multi-Level Government Initiative. The Chair’s focus is on (a) the functioning and reform of provincial and local government in South Africa; (b) multi-level government as a vehicle for peace-making, state-building and development in Africa; and (c) the place of multi-level government in the economic development policies emerging from the BRICS axis - Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa.

As part of the Chair’s activities, the following scholarship and post-graduate bursaries are offered for 2013:

1. One post-doctoral scholarship (two years)
A candidate must have a doctoral degree (LL D or Ph D or similar degree) in an aspect of multi-level government, awarded within the last five years. The successful candidate may not hold any other full-time or part-time position. To apply, forward a copy of the doctoral thesis and other relevant research output, as well as a curriculum vitae, a letter of motivation and the names and e-mail addresses of three referees.

2. Two doctoral bursaries (three years)
The bursary, for full-time study for three years, includes study fees, a monthly stipend, IT equipment, and a travel budget. Successful candidates will work and participate in the activities of the Multi-level Government Initiative. A condition for these full-time bursaries to become payable is that the candidate is accepted for doctoral studies (LL D or D Phil) with an approved topic in the field of multi-level government. 3. Four masters degree bursaries (one year)
The masters degree bursaries are for full-time studies in the Masters Programme on Multi-level Government, a multi-disciplinary and comparative programme. This Programme is tought by the experts in the field, including the SARChI Chair in Multi-level Government, Prof Nico Steytler, Prof Jaap de Visser, Mr Derek Powell, former Deputy Director-General of the Department of Provincial and Local Government, and visiting international scholars. The Programme comprises the following taught courses: Intergovernmental Relations; Local Government Law and Policy, Good Government, and an internship at a multi-level government institution.

To qualify, a student must hold or be scheduled to complete an LL B or an equivalent degree by the end of 2012. To apply, forward your academic record as well as a curriculum vitae and examples of essay writing, a letter of motivation and the names and e-mail addresses of three referees.
