The intersection of the role of traditional leadership in land use allocation, and the role of municipalities in land use management gives rise to tensions. How do we ensure that these roles are performed in a manner that respects each institutions’ authority with respect to land, and benefits the local community?

This webinar engages with this question and locates it in (1) the legal framework for land use management, namely the Spatial Planning and Land Use Management Act of 2013 (2) ongoing debates about which institution enjoys exclusive land use management powers over land and (3) observations about the intersection of the practice of the role of traditional leadership and municipalities in land use management.
