The resilience of the rule of law in Africa is continually tested by pervasive threats, such as military coups, constitutional coups, poverty, fragile institutions, conflict and civil war. For many countries in the region the challenge remains to entrench government under the rule of law, without which peaceful coexistence, the eradication of extreme poverty, and the promotion of human development will remain elusive ideals.

In this webinar, Professor John Mukum Mbaku discusses his latest research on threats to the rule of law in Africa, what the rule of law is and why it is an essential foundation for sustainable development and social justice, and the preconditions for the rule of law to take root in practice. Professor Mbaku will also reflect on how the rule of law has fared during the COVID-19 pandemic.
