Local government has a demanding service delivery and development mandate. Municipalities need, among other things, adequate resources to deliver on this mandate effectively. Prof Tania Ajam is part of a team from the School of Public Leadership at Stellenbosch University which undertook a study on municipal sustainability and analysed the local government fiscal framework. The study, which was supported by the Hanns Seidel Foundation, interrogated many questions relating to how local government is funded against its expenditure responsibilities. It considered questions such as: How appropriate is the current local government fiscal framework? How adequate is the Local Government Equitable Share grant in the face of escalating costs of municipal service delivery?

Join us at a webinar to discuss the key findings of this research with Prof Tania Ajam. The discussion will be moderated by Prof Jaap de Visser. The respondent will be Mr. Steven Kenyon, Chief Director of Public Finance at the Western Cape Provincial Treasury. Articles containing some of the key findings of Prof Ajam’s research have been published in the Local Government Bulletin of the DOI and can be accessed here.
