Few state institutions have received so much attention in recent years than the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA). Under new management the expectations are high to hold the perpetrators of state capture accountable and produce hard-hitting convictions against organised crime. Apart from these high expectations, the NPA must also, like other state entities, produce an annual report. It should be noted that the NPA still remains an entity within the Department of Justice and Constitutional Development and is not audited separately by the Auditor-General. It is also the case that the NPA did not always produce its own annual report as this only started under the leadership of Adv. Vusi Pikoli at the helm of the NPA.

The 2019/20 NPA annual report is the second one under the leadership of Adv. Shamila Batohi and she has publicly commented on the enormous and underestimated challenges facing the NPA. Is the NPA on the right track and placing down the correct building blocks, or is it too constrained by its allocated budget and skills shortages to re-invent itself?
