About this publication:
In Seeking the Right to Food, Dr Bright Nkrumah develops an argument on how the right to food could be approached beyond the traditional discourse. Nkrumah situates the gap between policy and practice as an opportunity for redress through collective action.
The book provides insights into constitutional rights, political obligations and counter-part entitlements – drawing on issues of the enforceability of socio-economic rights, mobilisation and conscientiousness and how they could be utilised to effect change. It presents a simplified notion of the ‘right to food’ in relation to human development, the realisation of other human rights and deepening inequality. Through demonstrating the effectiveness of affirmative and justified approaches, Nkrumah argues that freedom from hunger can only be achieved through the authoritative action of political and social institutions alike.
Seeking the Right to Food is relevant and timely in accounting for recent developments in the food paradigm and provides expedient legal-social thoughts into possibilities of transformation within legislation, economies, norms and practices. It will be a valuable contribution for economists, policymakers and human rights advocates who seek to advance social justice and human dignity in South Africa and beyond.
