Board members of State-Owned Enterprises Towards Transparent Appointments

With the assistance of the Open Society Foundation South Africa, the Dullah Omar Institute has started a project on the framework for the appointment and dismissal of Board members to state-owned enterprises. The project is informed by the need for greater transparency and inclusiveness in these appointments.

Our aim is to suggest options for law reform, criteria for board membership and criteria for appointment processes that recognise the role of the public in these appointments. Our objective is to complement the existing activities of other civil society organisations in this space.

The team working on this project includes some of DOI's governance and constitutional experts (Prof Lukas Muntingh, Ms Samantha Waterhouse. Ms Motlatsi Komote and Prof Jaap de Visser) as well as Prof Riekie Wandrag, a company law expert of UWC's Faculty of Law. Specific activities include the production of a series of research papers, workshops, a set of indicators and a guide.
