Applied Constitutional Studies Laboratory

The Applied Constitutional Studies Laboratory is a multi-disciplinary applied research project focusing on complex problems of governance at the intersection of Law, the State and Economy.

Our team employs advanced interdisciplinary and statistics-based methods to analyse complex problems of governance at the intersection of the law, the state, and human development in South Africa, the African region, and the BRICS countries. Our focus is on addressing complex problems by applied research into real-world governance problems lying at the intersection of law, state and socio-economic context.

ACSL (previously MLGI) since 2015 has been refining and enhancing its capacity for applied research by developing and publishing several new tools (called barometers and indices) that help to analyse the capability and impact of law, local government and state institutions in relation to a wide range of issues relating to accountable government, development, gender inequality and civic violence.
