Tanzania

Tanganyika became independent on 9 December 1961 (from British-administered UN trusteeship) and Zanzibar became independent on 19 December 1963 (from Britain). Tanganyika united with Zanzibar on 26 April 1964 to form the United Republic of Tanganyika and Zanzibar which was renamed the United Republic of Tanzania on 29 October 1964.

Tanzania has a legal system based on English common law.

Tanzania has a constitution dating from 1964 which provides that no person charged with a criminal offence shall be treated as guilty
of the offence until proved guilty of that offence; that human dignity shall be protected in all activities pertaining; and that no person shall be subjected to torture or inhuman or degrading punishment or treatment.
